I haven’t watched a movie with my eyes half closed in quite some time, until I watched The Conjuring last week. Half Exorcist, half Amityville Horror with a mix of Robert Wise’s 1963 classic The Haunting, the film reignites the classic horror trope of the haunted house to suspenseful and deeply satisfying results. Directed by James Wan, The Conjuring is based on real life paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren, who in the 1970s helped purge an evil spirit from the house of the Perron family in Harrisville, Rhode Island. The plot is similar to many other horror films, yet the editing and sound, along with stellar performances from Lilli Taylor in a Joan Fontaineque role (playing a similar character to the one she played in the 1999 remake of The Haunting), Patrick Wilson, and Vera Farmiga, make the film a truly terrifying experience to sit through. Watch it in a group. Don’t try it alone.
